Summary

EPA Logo The Missouri Recycling Association (MORA) is coordinating the development of the Show-Me Recycling! Campaign. The Show-Me Recycling! project is a multi-year educational campaign designed to disseminate information and provide education and training to recycling professionals statewide. This multi-year campaign will pull together existing information about the benefits of recycling in the State of Missouri and present it in a user-friendly format to be distributed to recycling professionals statewide.

Solid Waste Management District Logo As a statewide grassroots organization, MORA is in the best position to assume a "leadership role" in pulling together key players for this effort. MORA's varied membership includes many of the partners and contributors needed for the success of this project. MORA's partnership with these key players will help facilitate the project.

MDNR Logo The Show-Me Recycling! project is possible because of grant funding through EPA Region 7 and the St. Louis- Jefferson Solid Waste Management District. Other solid waste districts, such as District K, will be obligating funds to further this campaign as well.

Goal

This project will result in a greater public awareness of the benefits of recycling, expanded participation and venues for recycling and increased recycling rates. Stories from around the state will illustrate how the industry ties together private and public recycling activities demonstrating how the recycling industry is linked to other thriving industries in the State.

A focused, recycling marketing campaign will be developed and a variety of media will be used to communicate the branded message including a power point presentation, tabletop displays, web site, posters and tri-folds, and video. The developed resource materials will have a strong, consistent message.

Committees

Three subcommittees have been formed: Stories Committee, Data Committee, and Tools Committee.

Stories Committee

Donna Utter, Chair

The "stories" committee was tasked with identifying and soliciting compelling recycling success stories and creating a template. The positive stories that will be used to tell the big picture of Missouri's recycling infrastructure. The stories will be crafted to illustrate the key messages listed below:

"Recycling strengthens the environment"
"Recycling strengthens the economy"
"Recycling strengthens communities"
"Strong solid waste management programs at the district, state, and Federal levels are critical to the recycling industry"

SUCCESS STORIES - TEMPLATE #1 - TEMPLATE #2
INSTRUCTION SHEET FOR SUBMISSION OF SUCCESS STORIES
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: February 2, 2007

Data Committee

Kristin Tipton, Chair

The data committee determined that sufficient data existed to include in the Show-Me Recycling! report. MORA will gather, compile and utilize existing information regarding Missouri waste diversion rates, the economic and environmental impacts of the recycling industry, and successful programs within the state.

Tools Committee

Dave Berger, Chair

A comprehensive report will be created from the information gathered. From the report, MORA will create tools such as, but not limited to: brochures and other printed materials, displays, power-point presentations, web resources, etc., from information in the comprehensive report.

The tools will be made available to recycling professionals statewide and MORA will work on professional development to ensure that a unified, consistent message is conveyed to promote a better understanding of the environmental, economic and societal benefits that recycling provides to our communities.
